What else you should know about BMW key replacement

Even though there are many spare keys that can be purchased online for BMW, there are a few things you should know about the key replacement process:

  • Spare keys will need to be cut. When you buy a blank key online, chances are, the seller won’t cut it for you before delivery. The blade will need to be cut by your local auto locksmith. BMW uses high security blades which must be cut by a specialized machine. That’s why not all locksmiths will be able to cut them, but most auto locksmiths should.
  • Spare keys will need to be programmed. In addition to blade cutting, the new key will also need to be programmed to your car’s operating system. There are no self-programming car keys available for BMW. So, every blank that you order online will need to be programmed by a professional.
  • Your dealership may not be willing to program blank keys purchased online. Some BMW owners hope to save some money by purchasing a blank key online and then bringing it to their dealership for programming. But, be aware that not all dealerships will do this! In fact, you’re better off bringing the spare key to an auto locksmith who can program the new key. And, the bonus is that auto locksmiths tend to charge less than the dealership!
  • If you’re not sure about the kind of spare you need, leave it to us. We understand that figuring out compatibility can be overwhelming. Even though so many of the key sellers guarantee compatibility, there’s still a chance that you’ll get the number wrong and end up with a key that doesn’t work for your BMW. That’s why it’s always prudent to have your auto locksmith order, cut and program the key for you.
