Ordering a new key or fob replacement
The good news is, it is possible to order a Mercedes key or fob replacement online for a much lower price than going through your dealership. The bad news is that it can be very tricky to be sure that you’re ordering the right one for your particular model. Here are a few of the most common spares that may fit the ticket for you:
IYZ-3312 Keyless Entry Remote
This is a four-button key fob that will work for a number of different Mercedes models, including:
- A Class Models from 2011 to 2017
- C180, C200, C220, C230, and C250 Models from 1997 to 2015 (as well as C300 from 2008 to 2015 and C320 from 2001 to 2006)
- CL Class Models from 2001 to 2017
- E200, E20, E300, E350, E400, E500 Models from 1998 to 2016
- G320, G500, G55, G63 Models from 2002 to 2018
- GLA and GLK Classes from 2006 to 2018
- ML320, ML350, ML400, ML550 Models from 2005 to 2018
- S Class Models from 1998 to 2013
- Mercedes Viano and Vito from 2004 to 2017
You can ensure that your car is compatible with this blank key by checking the FCC ID number (IYZ 3312) on your previous key or the owner’s manual.
YM15 Transponder Key
For a limited time before the roll-out of keyless fobs, Mercedes Benz released trucks and vans with transponder keys. These were mechanical keys with a plastic head housing a transponder chip. A replacement YM15 will be compatible for the following Mercedes models that used this transponder key:
- Sprinter Van from 1998 to 2007
- Mercedes Actor, Actros, and Atego from 2002 to 2014
- Mercedes Vito from 1996 to 2003
Transponder keys need to be cut with a high security key cutting machine and programmed to be compatible with the ignition code.
S50HFP Mercedes Benz Ignition Key
If you have a Mercedes that was built before 2000, you can order a replacement mechanical key, such as the S50HFP. This ignition key is compatible with:
- S Class Models from 1979 to 1980
- W201, W126 and W202 Models from 1980 to 1999
- R107 Models from 1979 to 1986
- C220 and C280 Models from 1997 to 1999
- C230 from 1994 to 1999
This is a standard mechanical key without a transponder chip. In order to duplicate it, you will need the help of an auto locksmith who can cut high security car keys. That said, once it’s been cut, it will work without any further programming!
Looking for more options for models predating the 2000s? Another type of manual ignition key for Mercedes Benz is the HU41P and covers a range of models built between 1979 and 1992.
Mercedes Key Replacement Cutting and Programming
Once you’ve ordered the right blank key for your Mercedes Benz, the next step is cutting and (for transponder keys and fobs) programming. You will need a locksmith who has two types of specialized machinery for this: a high security key cutting machine and a key programming machine.
Key fobs and transponder keys will need to be programmed by someone with the right software to communicate with your Mercedes’s operating system. Not all mechanics or auto locksmiths have the capability, but FA Locksmith in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham has you covered!
Spare key cutting and programming
